No Word For Nature

No Word for Nature, a multi-media project currently in production, follows the migration of the endangered leatherback sea turtle. In the summer, the leatherbacks occupy their Nova Scotia feeding grounds, where researchers tag and count them to learn about their role in the ecosystem. At the onset of winter, the turtles journey thousands of miles to their nesting site in a remote indigenous village in Guna Yala Panama. There the Kuna people have lived in nearly perfect harmony with nature for centuries. The village is of significant ecological importance to critically endangered leatherbacks. The leatherback sea turtle and Kuna spirituality are intimately connected and equally struggling to survive. While people look toward new knowledge and progress as the solution to current environmental problems, this project explores how ancient wisdom is important today.
